Joshua Thomson has been working professionally within Austin’s live music scene since 2009. Thomson is known for his work ethic, creative approach, and improvisational prowess on alto saxophone. Joshua performs in a variety of musical settings ranging from Arab music, Latin, Brazilian, brass band, folk, funk, jazz, world music, & experimental contexts.
In 2019, Thomson’s band Atlas Maior was named Creative Ambassadors to the City of Austin. Thomson is a recipient of four City of Austin Proclamations (Atlas Maior, Cilantro Boombox, Micah Shalom). As a touring and recording saxophonist, Thomson has been playing music for over 25 years. Thomson has led jazz group Atlas Maior on international tours throughout Europe and in the US, while also working as a soloist and sideman in China, Spain, and Turkey.
Thomson’s groups have been featured on BBC Radio, Jazziz Magazine, NPR’s PRI The World, Huffington Post, MTV Iggy, Marrakech Biennale 5 Art Festival, and has opened for world renowned musicians Willie Nelson, Cafe Tacvba, Vieux Farka Touré, & Kaki King. In addition to music performance endeavors, Thomson studied Sociology at The University of Michigan, and has done qualitative research in The Dominican Republic.
