For Beginner Students

Beginner drummers will build essential skills and techniques to lay the foundation for their musical journey. Within a few weeks, students will learn:

Drum rudiments and basic rhythms.
Setting up and tuning the drum kit.
Stick control and hand-foot coordination.
Playing along to favorite songs and simple beats.

For Intermediate and Advanced Students

Intermediate and advanced drummers can expand their knowledge and refine their craft with lessons focused on personalized goals. Advanced topics include:

Exploring complex time signatures and polyrhythms.
Mastering grooves, fills, and dynamics.
Enhancing speed, control, and stamina through advanced techniques.
Preparing for performances, auditions, or recording sessions.

Most drum lessons are conducted in our fully equipped Central Austin studio, providing a comfortable and professional learning environment. For added flexibility, we offer virtual lessons via Zoom, complete with recorded sessions for practice and review.

I attended 2023 Texas Jazz & Blues Camp for the first time and I didn't know what to expect. I was the oldest, tallest student with the smallest instrument!. The experience and musicianship of the instructors was astonishing: we were getting tips on playing from Andre Hayward--a Jazz at Lincoln Center alum--and Don Braden, who blew with Herbie Hancock and Freddie Hubbard. The musical wisdom they passed on to us about constructing solos, honoring the melody, listening to each other, tips on practicing, and sage advice on how to approach playing jazz music, all that is priceless. I can say my five days at Texas Jazz Camp was inspirational...I'll be sipping from that spring for a long time.

My nine-year-old son has been taking violin and guitar from Mike for three years with New School of Music. It is unbelievable all he has learned! We could not be happier with the experience! Mike is very knowledgeable, patient and experienced with working with children.
